What Happens After the Tree Comes Down? Stumps, Regrowth and Replanting

Most tree removal quotes end at ground level, and most customers only think about the stump afterwards, when the mower hits it for the third time. Here's the full picture of what happens below the cut, and your options.

Option 1: leave it

Perfectly valid in the right spot. A stump in a wild corner is superb invertebrate habitat. The downsides: species like willow, poplar, lime and sycamore will regrow enthusiastically from a live stump, and decaying stumps of broadleaves can host honey fungus, which can spread to stressed neighbouring trees and shrubs.

Option 2: grind it

A stump grinder chews the stump into chip 150-300mm below ground, deeper by arrangement where construction or replanting follows. It takes minutes-to-hours, leaves lawn-ready ground, ends regrowth permanently, and removes the fungus reservoir. Can you replant in the same spot?

Yes, with two caveats: remove or disperse the grindings first (fresh chip locks up nitrogen as it rots, fine as surface mulch, bad mixed through a planting pit), and plant slightly offset from the old rootplate where soil structure is better. For hedges replacing hedges, we grind the line and import fresh soil along it.
