Stump Grinding Cost Guide
Stump grinding is usually cheaper than people expect, and far cheaper than wrestling a stump out by hand or digger. Here's how pricing works.
Typical price ranges
- Single small stump (under ~30cm diameter): from around £70 to £150.
- Medium stump (30-60cm): roughly £150 to £300.
- Large stump (60cm+): £300 upwards depending on species and access.
- Multiple stumps: big per-stump discounts once the machine is on site, dropping to site-clearance rates for many.

What affects the price
- Diameter and species: hardwoods and old, buttressed stumps take longer.
- Access: our narrow machines fit a standard garden gate; anything needing hand-carried kit costs more.
- Depth: standard grind is 150-300mm below ground; deeper for construction costs more.
- Grindings: left as mulch (free) or removed and backfilled with topsoil (charged).
Why grind rather than dig or poison?
Digging destroys lawns and drains; chemical killers take seasons and leave the stump in place. Grinding takes minutes-to-hours, leaves a plantable surface, and removes the honey-fungus risk of rotting stumps. It's the professional default for a reason.
