A 400-year-old oak is not a large version of a young oak. Retrenchment: working with the tree's own strategy

Ancient trees naturally shrink, shedding limbs and growing a lower, smaller crown on a hollowing frame. Good veteran management mimics this: staged, light reductions over years that take weight off failing limbs while keeping the photosynthetic engine running. The old forestry instinct to "tidy up" a veteran, stripping deadwood, cutting to clean stems, removes precisely the habitat and structure that make it valuable.

The estate owner's balancing act

• Safety: zone the risk. A veteran over a driveway needs active management; the same tree in a quiet park corner may simply need a fenced halo and admiration.
• Root protection: compaction kills veterans slowly. Keep vehicles, stock feeders and events off the rooting area, ideally the crown spread plus half again.
• Continuity planning: the next generation of veterans is planted (or spared) now. Identify successor trees and manage them with the same patience.
