Hedge Cutting Season: When You Can Cut, and When You Cannot

Every year we have the same conversation in March, and again in August. Someone wants a hedge cut, and the answer depends entirely on the date.

What the law says

Wild birds, their nests and their eggs are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. It is an offence to intentionally damage or destroy an active nest. Nesting runs roughly from March to August, though it varies with species and weather, and a mild spring brings it forward.

There is no law that bans hedge cutting on a particular date. What there is, is a law against destroying active nests, and in practice that means a responsible contractor stops cutting through the season rather than gambling on whether a hedge is occupied.

What this means for your hedge

• September to end of February: open season. Anything goes, including hard renovation back into old wood.
• March to August: we check before we cut. Light trimming of a hedge with no nesting activity can sometimes go ahead. Anything heavy waits.
• Any time: genuinely dangerous work still goes ahead, with a check first.

Planning around it

The two weeks before the season shuts and the first month after it reopens are the busiest of our year. If a hedge needs real work rather than a tidy, book it early. September and October are the best months of all: the hedge has a full season of growth to take off, and it goes into winter looking sharp.

Renovation in particular belongs in the dormant season. Cutting a tired hedge back hard works far better between November and February than it does in summer, and it recovers properly the following spring.
