Crown Reduction vs Topping: Why the Difference Matters for Your Trees

2026-08-26 · Heartwood Tree Management

Professional crown reduction by a climbing arborist

"Can you take a third off the top?" It's the most common request in tree work, and the answer separates professional arborists from someone with a chainsaw and a ladder. Both crown reduction and topping make a tree smaller. Only one of them is tree surgery.

What topping does

Topping cuts straight through branches and stems at an arbitrary height, leaving stubs. The tree responds in panic: masses of fast, weakly attached regrowth sprouting from around each wound. Within five to ten years you have a denser, heavier crown on weaker attachments, genuinely more dangerous than the tree you started with, plus large decaying wounds the tree cannot close. It's why BS 3998 treats topping as unacceptable practice.

What crown reduction does

A proper reduction shortens branches back to suitable growth points, smaller live branches that can take over as the new tips. The tree keeps a natural (if smaller) shape, wounds are small enough to occlude, and regrowth is steady rather than panicked. Done well, you'd struggle to notice a reduced tree had been touched at all, which is exactly the point.

Questions that reveal the difference

  • "Where will you make the cuts?" A professional talks about growth points, not heights.
  • "How much are you taking?", reductions are specified in metres and percentages per BS 3998, and rarely exceed 30%.
  • "What will it look like in five years?" The honest answer includes a re-pruning cycle, not "sorted forever".

Heartwood's NPTC-certified climbers reduce everything from garden apples to veteran oaks across Dorset, always to BS 3998. Free quotes, send photos via the contact form and we'll often price it the same day.
